Strings, lattice gauge theory, high energy phenomenology. Proceedings of the Winter School, Panchgani, India, January 25 - February 5, 1986, Organized by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay. (English) Zbl 0629.53074
Singapore: World Scientific. (Distr. by John Wiley & Sons Ltd., Chichester). X, 598 p.; £67.60 (1987).
As the title indicates this book of lectures has three distinct parts. Although the material is about two years old in these rapidly changing fields there are some interesting articles. In string theories the main articles are the following: B. Sakita, Functional-integral approach to string theories, K. Kikkawa, Introduction to field theory of strings, A. Dhar, Superstrings and geometry of superspace, S. Muhki, Nonlinear $$\sigma$$-models and string theories, S. Jain, Covariant strings and 2-dimensional conformally invariant field theory, G. Mandel, Infinite-dimensional algebras, V. G. Kac and A. K. Raina, Representations of $$Diff_ 0S^ 1$$, Exceptional Lie algebras. In addition there are shorter papers by S. M. Roy and V. Singh; T. R. Govindarajan, R. Soroja, and S. Mohapatra and S. P. Misra. There is also a manuscript by Y. Nambu, dated from 1970, and published here for the first time, on duality and hydrodynamics.
In the second area of the title there is only one paper by J. Kogut, Lattice gauge theory. High energy phenomenology contains articles by C. Quigg, R. J. N. Phillips, D. P. Roy, P. Roy and R. M. Godbole. Finally the section on general field theory contains short papers by R. Shankar (Chiral anomalies), G. Date (Bozonization in two dimensions), A. Maheswari (Higgs-like effect in Kaluza-Klein theory) and J. Samuel and B. R. Iyer (Gravitational analog of the Dirac monopole).
