Shampine, L. F.; Allen, R. C. jun.; Pruess, S. Fundamentals of numerical computing. (English) Zbl 0904.65001 New York, NY: Wiley. x, 268 p. (1997). It requires courage to write yet another introductory book for numerical methods. The authors’ work is really worth the effort, the distinctive character of their text lying in its stress on practical numerical computation, on devising and evaluating algorithms and routines, thereby developing general theory to an extent necessary to understand their working, their advantages and disadvantages, and illustrating their behavior in treatment of concrete problems by many case studies. Many exercises give the reader opportunity to test his understanding and to learn additional items. The material treated is intended for a one-semester course, and there are six chapters: Errors and floating point arithmetic, Systems of linear equations, Interpolation (including splines and interpolation in the plane), Roots of nonlinear equations, Numerical integration, Ordinary differential equations.
