From the text: This special volume on the Analysis of Evolutionary and Complex Systems is dedicated to Alexander Mielke on the occasion of his 60th birthday, who was formerly our supporting doctoral supervisor and is now our valued colleague, collaborator, and friend. To celebrate this special day, we have identified four main research topics in the analysis of partial differential equations to which he made significant contributions and gave new impulses during his fruitful career as a researcher. These four topics are I) variational methods in continuum mechanics, II) dynamical systems, III) gradient systems, and IV) multiscale problems. One central goal of this special volume is to highlight the development and extension of variational approaches in these fields.
