International mathematical journals published in Poland between the wars. (English) Zbl 1180.01038
In this interesting article the author describes the origins and influence of the three international periodicals founded in Poland and devoted to modern fields of mathematics: Fundamenta mathematicae (1920), Studia mathematica (1929), and Acta arithmetica (1935). She points out a number of authors and papers. The original idea of Zygmunt Janiszewski naturally created cooperation of mathematicians working in central fields of mathematics. This led to a remarkable development. Even now the fundamental simple results of that flourishing period are being cited almost every day at some blackboards in the world, in contrast to much more sophisticated and difficult theorems of present times. The journals were financed by the Polish government, though the scope was truly international and indepenent of the political relations of those times.
It was not unusual that authors and even editors commented papers published in earlier volumes, and did not hesitate to publish “acknowledgements of priority” (“reconnaissance du droit d’auteur”) if it happened that some results had appeared earlier elsewhere. It is still very important to remind the etiquette of those times to the present and future generations.
