Preface of guest-editors. (English) Zbl 1326.00084

From the text: Mathematical signal and image processing is a highly innovative, rapidly developing branch of Applied Mathematics which involves various mathematical fields and addresses topics in Computer Science and Engineering. It has established itself as an important area of both fundamental research and impressive applications.
The six papers of this issue provide an overview of mathematical state-of-the-art research in signal and image processing ranging from partial differential equations and variational approaches, applied harmonic analysis, and compressed sensing to geometric and topological techniques as well as probabilistic and statistical methodologies.
