Transient flow around a circular cylinder near the moving and rigid ground by a vortex method. (English) Zbl 0963.76067

Summary: The transient flow around a circular cylinder placed above a plane wall is simulated by a combined vortex method, which is the combination of vortex blob method and vortex sheet method. Two cases are treated to examine the effect of the boundary layer on the wall: (1) the cylinder suddenly moves over the fixed wall, and (2) it starts suddenly over the moving wall with the same velocity. Our numerical results show that: (1) shedding vortices are slightly different in the two cases; (2) the lift and drag distributions against time are almost the same for \(h\geq 0.5\), where \(h\) is the gap ratio between the cylinder and the wall normalized with the diameter of the circular cylinder, but they are different for \(h\leq 0.25\).
