Summary: This mathematical essay is devoted to the description of some Diophantine problems (Weil conjectures, Mordell’s problem, Fermat’s ‘theorem’). Some biographical data are given about the mathematicians who have made decisive contributions to the solution of these problems. This article is written for readers interested in contemporary mathematics. In particular, it will be useful to mathematics students and to teachers of mathematics.
