Ammari, H.; Hamdache, K.; Nédélec, J.-C. Chirality in the Maxwell equations by the dipole approximation. (English) Zbl 0933.78002 SIAM J. Appl. Math. 59, No. 6, 2045-2059 (1999). The authors show how chiral media may be realized by embedding chiral objects such as helices in an isotropic medium. They show how the Drude-Born-Fedorov constitutive relations may be derived as a limiting process from Maxwell’s equations with a collection of randomly oriented helical conductors each being modelled by a dipole.
