Effects of relativistic and channel focusing on an intense laser beam propagating in a plasma channel: variational analysis. (English) Zbl 1123.78315

Summary: Propagation of an intense laser beam in a plasma channel is analyzed by means of the variational method. A differential equation of the spot size is derived including the effects of relativistic self-focusing (RSF), ponderomotive self-channeling (PSC) and preformed channel focusing (CF). The effect of PSC enhances beam focusing and is negligible only in the region of beam defocusing oscillations. And the periods of beam oscillations are obtained.
