The paper presents the history of the Moscow Mathematical Society established in autumn 1864. It is the oldest mathematical society in Russia and one of the oldest in the world. The following subjects are presented and discussed: the birth of the Society, the Society at the turn of the century, the creation of the Moscow School of Function Theory, the revolution and the first years of Soviet power, the period of crisis and trials, the establishment and triumph of the Soviet Mathematical School, the Society in the past decade of its history. The Moscow Mathematical Society is presented on the background of the development of mathematics in Russia.
