Regularities and modern tendencies of the development of mathematics. (English) Zbl 0644.01009

This paper gives a report on a symposium on methodological, philosophical and historical problems in mathematics and its development held in Soviet Union during 1985. There is a very general discussion on the subject matter; however, some highlights of some recent work including the theorem on the four-color problem by Appel and Haken, Donaldson’s work on four-dimensional Yang-Mills fields, etc. are mentioned. The question naturally arises to what extent the various approaches to the development of mathematics depend on the socio-cultural, historical-political, and ideological system of the country (which is in the present case, Soviet Union) or whether this development is independent of all these constraints as mathematical results, whether ideas and problems are universally valid?
