Applied mathematics research - the key to the engineering future. (English) Zbl 1054.00506

From the introduction: Consistent with the aim and style of applied mathematical modelling is also my view that the role of numerics should be a strictly limited one, confined ideally to the solution of non-stiff problems which cannot be simplified further, are analytically quite intractable, and where the solution has quasi-universal of at least widely applicable form. The purely numerical solution of a problem depending on several independent variables and parameters is not, in my view, a solution at all; it represents no more than a numerical experiment and, like any other set of experimental findings, needs modelling, simplification, analysis and interpretation before we can be said to understand the information in it. Several examples may illustrate some of these points.
