Analyse discriminante sur variables continues. (Discriminant analysis on continuous variables). (French) Zbl 0727.62064

Collection Didactique, 7. Rocquencourt: INRIA. 188 p. FF 150.00 (1990).
This book on discriminant analysis gathers a series of well-written chapters on almost all currently known aspects of this advanced statistical technique. The subjects treated include the search and quality of decision rules for discriminant analysis, the evaluation of discrimination errors, the links of this technique with factor and variance analysis, and also the presentation of some alternative methods based on segmentation and non-probabilistic techniques. In total, this book should be considered as a wide and fairly complete presentation of discriminant analysis, adequately illustrated with some examples of practical applications. The book ends with an extended list of references.
The main criticism one can have against this pluri-author work is that almost each chapter is an independent article, with separate introductions and conclusions, with its own methodology and with little connections with the other parts of the book. Even a few repetitions could not be avoided. This is the reason why this mathematically correct book seems better destined to someone already well-introduced into discriminant analysis, who wants to improve his knowledge in some aspects of this advanced statistical technique. As an introduction into this subject it is too badly structured and less well adapted, and is hence not recommended.
